First Light illustrates the San story of the sun and advent of light in the world. This project delves into sharing stories originating from the African continent, with this particular story coming from the Cape.

The illustrations for this book aim to harmonize text and imagery in a way that transcends simple visual representation. The goal was to convey the story’s themes without directly mirroring the text, integrating words and images seamlessly within the layout.

First published by Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) 2024 as First Light written by Meridian Berndt and illustrated by Jax Lamb for The Stories that Ran Away, a series of sixteen African folktales.
